Natura umanĂŁ are un nou nume: confuzie.
How far can we go? How much longer are we going to destroy life to justify our way of life?
This is a question that goes beyond environmental issues and beyond politics – it is about mankind’s innermost nature, it is about our intimate thoughts and principles.
Mindbomb is more than about street posters, more than about pointing to issues or seeking solution. It is the expression of our fears, ignorance and anger; it is about contrasting what is good and bad in us; showing us our dreams and nightmares.
In this modern world, the shapes of nature have become the shapes of our destruction. The shape of a mushroom or a tree has the shape of a nuclear cloud. An artificial island has become the shape of a tree. A gold mine looks like a never-ending desert; curling in like the shape of a rose. We have a new human nature: it’s called confusion. We don’t know anymore what is good or bad. We don’t know if the images we see, the buildings we build or the things we invent are expressions of right or wrong. What is right for us might be wrong for our natural environment, but if it’s wrong for nature it is wrong for us, too. So, we are hurting ourselves. But we can’t stop. How far can we go? Where and when does this confusion end? Mindbomb gives you the images. The answers are for you to find...
SHARJAH BIENNIAL 8 ART ECOLOGY & THE POLITICS OF CHANGE STILL LIFE 4 April - 4 June 2007, Sharjah, UAE
The Sharjah Biennial 8 (SB8) proposes art as a way of creating a better understanding about our relationship with nature and the environment, whilst considering its social, political and cultural dimensions in an interdisciplinary way. Aware of the critical ambiguity of its topic and its potentially controversial dimension, SB8 will attempt to explore the renewed role of contemporary art as a vanguard force, which could invoke active dialogues about possible future sustainable scenarios. SB8 will present various attempts in visual art, performance and film that address the growing social, political and environmental challenges that the world is facing due to excessive urban development, pollution, political ambition, and the thoughtless misuse, abuse and exhaustion of our natural resources. SB8 will not only be a platform for presentations, exhibitions and discussions related to these issues, but will also take an active role in commissioning artists to produce new work addressing the topic at hand, and will partner with various organizations to stimulate wider involvement with these concerns, particularly amongst educational institutions. The biennial will attempt to contaminate rather than insulate and to merge together art, society, and environmental issues, in order to implicate all sectors of society into questioning our social, political, and ecological praxis.
